Monument was exhibited at Barr Gilmore’s Solo Exhibition window gallery during the lunar cycle that included the date September 11, 2002.
The following statement accompanied the exhibition at the time:
Monument was made as a birthday gift to my son, Max who was born on September 11, 1990. This date that now has such a great global significance has always had a great personal significance for him. A child’s birthday is probably the most important date in his or her life. Since the horrible events of last September 11, he has seen this date that has been a day of happiness and celebration for him transform into a day of public mourning and great sorrow. Not a day goes by where he doesn’t hear his birthday mentioned in the media in a manner that resonates with death, destruction, fear, hatred and countless other negative connotations. Though obviously tempered given the events of last September 11, this work was made as a loving, life affirming monument for Max.
